The Best Cocktail For You, According To Your Zodiac Sign
Are you a regular reader of your daily horoscope, or are you such a devotee of astrology that you plan your every action in accordance with how the stars align? Even if you have only the most casual interest in astrology, still, it's always fun to see how something so random as your sun sign supposedly influences all of your likes and dislikes and can be used to determine everything from what color shoelaces you should wear to your favorite holiday candy to the type of person you should marry.
You know what else is super fun? Discovering exciting new cocktails, or rediscovering old classics. Well, why not combine the two topics for an astrology/mixology mashup? In accordance with the newly-christened science of mix-trology, we peered deep into our crystal balls, consulted our star charts, and determined exactly what drinks are best suited to each different sign of the zodiac. What drink could the heavens have decreed for you?
Aries: Cuba Libre
Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, which also makes it symbolically the youngest of the signs. It's true that Aries, no matter their age, have a youthful energy they carry with them throughout their lives. They are also fun-loving and sure know how to party. What better drink for an Aries than something that has been the favorite (and perhaps the first) cocktail of countless just-turned-21s? For you, Aries, we chose a drink that's based on the rum and Coke, but adds an extra twist — the Cuba Libre.
Making a Cuba Libre couldn't be much simpler. Squeeze half a lime into a tall glass, fill the glass with ice, then pour in an ounce or two of rum and fill the glass with Coke, or with Pepsi. Light rum is traditionally used for Cuba Libres, but gold or dark rum are also good. However, if you want a bit more complexity, you can drop the lime shell into the glass after squeezing it and mash it around with your cocktail muddler to release some of the citrus oils.
Taurus: Kir Royale
Taurus is one of the most underestimated signs of the zodiac. The words that are used to describe Tauruses make them sound kind of, well, boring — rock-solid, steady, dependable, yet with a tendency towards stubbornness. While all these things can be true (except for the boring part), what people often forget about Tauruses is that the sign is ruled by Venus, the planet named for the goddess of love and beauty. As a result, Taurus of all the signs truly appreciates the finer things in life. For you, Taurus, we've chosen one of the most elegant and indulgent of cocktails — the Kir Royale.
In order to make a Kir Royale, you start with champagne, or at least a decent-quality sparkling wine or a Prosecco if you like things sweet. You will also need crème de cassis, which is a blackcurrant liqueur, although black raspberry-based Chambord may also be used. Pour 1/4 ounce of the liqueur into a champagne flute — this is just a teaspoon and a half of liquid. Fill the flute with chilled champagne, and serve to your favorite luxury-loving Taurus.
Gemini: Tom and John Collins
Geminis are frequently the life of the party, full of fizz and sparkle. Of course a bubbly cocktail would be suitable for this sign, but which one to pick? In light of Gemini's dual nature, we're going with the Collins twins — Tom and John.
The difference between the two Collinses is, Tom is made with gin, while John is made with whiskey (some like to use bourbon, but other recipes call for blended whiskey). Star by filling a tall glass — a Collins glass, if you've got one — with ice, then pour in an ounce and a half of your chosen spirit. Add an ounce of lemon juice and half an ounce of simple syrup, stir, then top off with 2 ounces of club soda. Garnish with a slice of orange or lemon and maybe a maraschino cherry.
Cancer: Bee's Knees
While Cancers can be very loving and caring, they may also have a tendency toward moodiness due to being ruled by the ever-changing moon. In order to reflect the sweet, yet complex nature of Cancer natives, we've chosen a Prohibition era honey of a cocktail called the Bee's Knees.
As the name implies, the Bee's Knees is a cocktail sweetened with honey, but the sweetness is cut with lemon juice and offset by the floral, yet astringent, notes of the gin. It's simple enough to make — all you need to do is add 2 ounces of gin, 3/4 ounce of fresh lemon juice, and 1/2 ounce of honey syrup to a cocktail shaker, shake over ice, then strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a twist. If you're wondering where to get honey syrup, you can just make it yourself since it's a simple 1:1 combination of honey and water.
Leo: Singapore Sling
Leo the lion is the most flamboyant of zodiac signs, known for a larger-than-life personality. Leos always love taking center stage, so we picked a cocktail that also stands out in any crowd — the Singapore Sling, a drink with a distinctive red color that suits the fiery Leo personality
The Singapore Sling isn't the easiest of cocktails to put together, but then, Leos themselves demand a fair share of attention. The recipe calls for 3/4 ounce gin, 1/4 ounce Benedictine, 1/4 ounce Grand Marnier, 1/4 ounce cherry Heering liqueur, 1 ounce pineapple juice, 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice, and a dash of Angostura bitters all shaken over ice, strained into a highball glass, and topped off with club soda before being garnished with an orange slide and a cherry.
Virgo: White Lady
Virgos are modest, understated, even shy at times, yet they have very exacting standards and expect nothing but the best from themselves as well as others. For you, Virgo, we've chosen the subtle, elegant White Lady.
The White Lady, according to Serious Eats, is the creation of the legendary Japanese mixologist Kazuo Uyeda. To make it, you simply mix 2 ounces of a London-style dry gin with 1/2 ounce of Cointreau and 1/2 ounce of fresh lemon juice, shake over ice, and then strain and serve in a cocktail glass.
Libra: Aviation
Libra is symbolized by the scales, and, like the scales, this sign is all about balance. Libras are also an air element, so for them we've chosen an appropriately airy libation — the Aviation.
The Aviation, an old-fashioned drink that has enjoyed quite a revival in the craft cocktail era, is, like a Libra, all about creating harmony out of disparate elements — astringent gin, sweet maraschino liqueur, slightly perfumey crème de violette, and sour lemon. The recipe calls for mixing 2 ounces of the gin with 1/4 ounce of each liqueur and 1/2 ounce of fresh lemon juice, then shaking over ice and straining into a cocktail or martini glass. The drink is a lovely violet color that will appeal to beauty-loving Libras.
Scorpio: Negroni
Scorpios, tend to be rather intense and even mysterious. What better drink for a Scorpio than a drink that's equally dark and complex and, like the scorpion, has a bit of a sting in its tail? We're talking, of course, about the Negroni, a cocktail that, like the Scorpio, is definitely not for the timid.
While the Negroni's flavor profile may be complicated, making the drink couldn't be much easier. You simply stir together equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth over ice, then strain into an ice-filled rocks glass. While it may not be love at first sip, the Negroni, like a Scorpio, has a curious charm that may just sneak up on you before you reach the bottom of the glass.
Sagittarius: Tequila Sunrise
Sagittarians are known for being bold, enthusiastic, and up for any adventure that comes their way. For this fire sign, we chose a drink that's bright, refreshing, and full of flavor and as straightforward as those born under the sign of the archer — the Tequila Sunrise. Sagittarius, a born rock star, will not only enjoy the drink, but also appreciate the fact that it inspired The Eagles' 1973 hit of the same name.
To make the Tequila Sunrise, all you need to do is pour an ounce and a half of tequila and 3 ounces of orange juice into a tall, ice-filled glass, then drizzle half an ounce of grenadine down along the inside of the glass. The grenadine will sink to the bottom, creating a dramatic sunrise effect with no further effort required.
Capricorn: Old Fashioned
Capricorns are the die-hard traditionalists of the zodiac. They are considered to be old souls, though some would call them downright old fashioned. Well, there's nothing wrong with that, as often the old ways are the best ones.
In honor of you, Capricorn, we present the Old Fashioned, a time-tested drink that is one of the oldest-known cocktails. A proper Old Fashioned is made by muddling a sugar cube or a spoonful of simple syrup with a couple of dashes of bitters and a spoonful of water in a chilled rocks glass, then filling the glass with 2 ounces of rye or bourbon, adding ice, and garnishing with a twist of orange or lemon. Capricorns who come from Wisconsin, however, will want to use brandy in place of whiskey in their Old Fashioned, then top the drink with soda and add a maraschino cherry to the garnish.
Aquarius: Moonwalk
Aquarians are visionaries, who boldly go where no person has gone before. For the water-bearer, we present an offbeat cocktail that dates back to the dawning of the Age of Aquarius — the Moonwalk. The Moonwalk, according to Saveur, was created in 1969 by the head bartender at London's Savoy Hotel in honor of the Apollo 11 moon landing, which was the first time humankind had ever set foot on extraterrestrial turf. In fact, this cocktail was the first beverage imbibed by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin upon their return to planet earth.
In case you were wondering, no, this drink does not contain a single drop of Tang (Aldrin actually couldn't stand the stuff). Instead, it's made from one ounce each of grapefruit juice and orange liqueur (Grand Marnier, for preference) and a few drops of rose water, topped off with champagne or sparkling wine for a drink that's out of this world.
Pisces: Fog Cutter
Pisces the fish, is the twelfth and last sign in the zodiac, and contains elements of all the other signs. Most of these qualities, however, are kept below the surface of those tranquil-seeming Piscean waters.
For a Pisces cocktail, we went with the Fog Cutter, a drink that, like Pisces, has a little bit of everything — it calls for 1 1/2 ounces of white rum, 1/2 ounce each of gin, brandy, Amontillado sherry, and orgeat, 2 ounces of fresh orange juice, 1/2 ounce of fresh lemon juice, and a mint sprig to make it look pretty. As the Fog Cutter is a tiki drink, you could even serve it in a cute mermaid mug, something sure to please the ocean-loving Pisces.
