The Summer-Flavored Sandwich Cookie That Reddit Spotted At Aldi
Not only does Aldi post a list on its website of current weekly specials, but it helpfully gives a sneak peek of upcoming items, as well. Sometimes, if you're extra lucky, you may even get to pick up an item before its official release — case in point, the Benton's Key Lime Sandwich Creme cookies that are set to drop on May 24th. One lucky Redditor grabbed a package of these summertime treats nearly a full week before their scheduled debut.
After this sharp-eyed shopper posted their haul to social media, they then sampled and rated the cookies, giving them a 6.5 on a scale of 10. According to the Redditor, they "like them" but didn't go into more specifics than that. Nonetheless, commenters were intrigued by the idea of a key lime pie-flavored cookie. If you, too, are interested in trying this item, it is priced at $2.49 per 15.25-ounce package. Each cookie has 75 calories, but Aldi doesn't list the number of cookies per package on its website. For comparison, though, a 14.3-ounce package of standard-sized Oreos contains 36.
Oreo released a similar flavor a few years back
Speaking of Oreos, one person commented on the Reddit thread: " I like that Aldi makes these because Oreo would never lol." As it turns out, that isn't entirely true. Oreo did come out with a limited-edition key lime pie flavor and, in fact, released it twice — the first time was in 2015, with an encore two years later. If Aldi's cookies are anything like the Oreo ones, they should be pretty good. Junk Banter found the graham cracker-flavored cookies with their sour-sweet filling to taste just like their eponymous pie, which is a long-time Florida favorite despite not being that state's official dessert,
It's possible, however, that Benton's key lime sandwich cookies may more closely resemble the same brand's key lime thins that were first offered by Aldi last spring. These cookies had a mixed reception, with Amazon purchasers rating them an average of 3.9 out of 5 stars and describing them as anything from "awesome" to "icky." With the key lime sandwich cremes being new and relatively unreviewed, though, if you're a real key lime pie fan and/or you loved Oreo's take on these cookies it may be worth a few bucks just to try out the Aldi ones.
