Costco Is Supposedly Testing Out New Food Court Ice Cream Flavors
Sure, it may seem like everybody loves Costco's food court (at least everyone who's willing to fork over the $$ for the membership fee, that is), but that doesn't mean it's above reproach. Its menu options are somewhat limited, after all, particularly when it comes to the dessert selection. That's why it's big news when the chain considers adding a new item, but don't get too excited over the possibility of new ice cream flavors. Yes, these are apparently available at one or more Costco food courts. But as far as we can tell, only in Ottawa, Canada.
According to one Costco fan account on Instagram, an Ottawa food court is currently test-marketing vanilla soft serve with two types of mix-ins: Oreo pieces and broken-up Skor bars. (Perhaps Hershey's answer to the Heath bar is more popular in Canada as certain varieties are only available in that country.) This same information was also shared on Reddit, where one commenter pointed out that the new menu item is "literally a McFlurry," only, one presumes, without the "machine is broken" excuses. Another person noted that soft serve with mix-ins is "literally a DQ Blizzard," as well.
Costco's food court has changed up its ice cream options a few times before
So will we ever see these new ice cream options in the U.S.? Who knows? Costco's Canadian food courts have had poutine for years, but this dish has yet to migrate to Costcos south of the border. If we ever do see any new ice cream options, though, it's likely to take a good long while for them to get here. After all, it wasn't until 2020 that Costco even had soft-serve ice cream. Prior to that, shoppers had to make do with froyo, instead.
If Costco really wants a crowd-pleaser, though, it doesn't need to come up with any brand-new ice cream concoctions for the American menu or even import any of its offerings from Canada or other countries. Instead, all it needs to do is to revive a fan favorite that's been gone for a decade: the hand-dipped, almond-covered ice cream bars that were taken off Costco's menu back in 2013. A Change.org petition asking Costco to restore these ice cream bars has been garnering signatures for years, so it would seem like a no-brainer to bring them back, if even at a higher price.
