We Tried Buffalo Wild Wings' New Saucy Chicken Sandwich. Here's How It Went
Let's open this review with a public service announcement: If you're going to try any of Buffalo Wild Wings' new Saucy Chicken Sandwiches, you're going to need plenty of napkins. Maybe some wet wipes, too. Actually, if we're being honest, you'll have access to a sink with the tap running at all times right there beside your table. Yes, they really are that saucy, and as such they get very, very messy. We went through nine large paper napkins, and that was with a trip to the sink to rinse and dry.
But hey, with that great mess comes some pretty great flavors, so perhaps it's all worth it. Especially because those flavors can come in some two dozen varieties. To that end, these sandwiches come drenched in the classic Buffalo Wild Wings sauce of your choosing, such as Teriyaki, Spicy Garlic, Caribbean Jerk, Thai Curry, Original Buffalo, or any of the other many sauces you have long loved on BW3 chicken wings.
We tried three sandwiches, which we cut them into thirds, given that not even in the name of journalism would eating three full sandwiches have been a good idea. Those portions were respectively doused in Parmesan Garlic sauce, Mango Habanero sauce, and a true classic, Honey BBQ sauce. We'll break down each for you later on an individual basis, but first let's talk generally about the new Saucy Chicken Sandwich on offer from Buffalo Wild Wings.
What's in the new Saucy Chicken Sandwich?
There is an elegant simplicity to the new Saucy Chicken Sandwiches from Buffalo Wild Wings. The chain really lets the sauces do the talking — or taste-making, that is — with relatively few ingredients overall. According to a July 2022 press release put out about the new sandwiches, they are "made with hand-breaded chicken smothered in any one of [Buffalo Wild Wings'] 26 signature sauces and seasonings on a toasted challah bun." Aside from a number of pickle slices stacked up underneath that generously-sized and breaded fried chicken patty, that's all you'll find on one of these sandwiches.
That's okay, actually, given that the sauces add more than enough flavor. In fact, were there a bunch of other ingredients here — such as sandwich staples like sliced tomatoes, lettuce, and onions — the flavors may have become convoluted. Also, these sandwiches were messy enough without added ingredeitns that tend to send buns slipping and sliding. All told, we're happy with the simplicity here.
How much does it cost?
At the time of this writing, the new Buffalo Wild Wings Saucy Chicken Sandwich is not officially for sale. Indeed, this menu item isn't even featured on the company's website yet (though they are being advertised heavily when you sit on hold with one of the chain's locations). So, we aren't entirely sure what the price will be when the sandwiches make it to a restaurant near you. We do know that they may sell for different prices at different locations, according to the official press release.
But we wanted to get a sense of the pricing, at least, so we grabbed the phone and called up multiple locations to ask about the price of the new Saucy Chicken Sandwich. While some Buffalo Wild Wings spots didn't have the info just yet, several did. The consensus price we came up with is that the new sandwiches will cost some where in the neighborhood of $9.79. Note that, as with most sandwiches that are sold at Buffalo Wild Wings, that price includes a side like fries, beer-battered onion rings, or potato wedges.
While we can't guarantee that this is the price you'll find, given that it's one dollar more than the comparable mainstay sandwich from Buffalo Wild Wings (the Classic Chicken Sandwich, which sells for $8.79), it's a safe bet.
The sandwiches will be available nationwide
When Buffalo Wild Wings rolls out a new menu item, it almost always goes big. Such was the case when the chain released its new Bird Dawgs (essentially, chicken tender hot dogs in three excellent flavors: Buffalo Bird Dawg, Honey BBQ Bird Dawg, and Loaded Bird Dawg) which went nationwide in June 2022.
When the new Saucy Chicken Sandwiches come out (which may well have happened by the time you are reading these very words) they too will be available at Buffalo Wild Wings locations everywhere. Furthermore, there is no planned end to their sale — no "limited time" only here.
It's not really that surprising that these sandwiches will be available nationwide and for an indefinite period. After all, they are created using ingredients all Buffalo Wild Wings locations already have on hand, namely challah buns, pickles, chicken patties, and sauces. Oh, and spices. You can conceivable get a Saucy Sandwich with a relatively dry seasoning instead of a sauce, but should you? We'll let the individual diner decide.
How do they compare to other items on the Buffalo Wild Wings menu?
Frankly speaking, the "new" Saucy Chicken Sandwiches are quite similar to another Buffalo Wild Wings menu item we already mentioned: the Classic Chicken Sandwich. That beloved foodstuff consists of a hand-breaded and fried piece of chicken, a sliced challah bun, pickles, and mayonnaise. In other words, it's a bun with chicken, pickles, and a sauce. In the case of the Saucy Chicken Sandwiches, the mayo is replaced by a different sauce of your choosing from the roster of sweet, savory, and spicy sauces you know from other Buffalo Wild Wings menu items.
While this may not be a groundbreaking new menu item, these sandwiches are nonetheless quite good. We think they are worth the extra one dollar you will pay to get a Saucy Chicken Sandwich (and a side) compared to the Classic Chicken Sandwich.
Now, could an enterprising soul have ordered a side of sauce and a Classic Chicken Sandwich without the mayo and created their own version of these new sandwiches? Yes. But did you ever think to do so?
What's the nutrition info?
These sandwiches are currently so new that many Buffalo Wild Wings employees didn't yet have the 4-1-1 on them, given that a few of the locations we called were unsure of the pricing. Likewise, people weren't quite sure how to track down the nutrition info. That will be available on the Buffalo Wild Wings site soon enough, but for now, we did a bit of sleuthing for you to get some preliminary nutritional info.
If we use the Classic Chicken Sandwich as the closest comparison to the new Saucy Chicken sandwich (and if you'll allow for us just to analyze the three sandwiches we actually tried), we can create a decent approximation of the nutrition info of the new eats. As per Buffalo Wild Wings, the Classic Chicken Sandwich rates at 620 calories, bringing along 32 grams of fat (10 grams of which are saturated fat) and 1,220 milligrams of sodium. If we assume there is about a tablespoon of mayo on the Classic Chicken Sandwich, that comes out to 100 calories, 10 grams of fat (0.5 grams of saturated fat), and 88 milligrams of sodium (via Food Network).
So, with the mayo removed, we're left with 520 calories, 22 grams of fat (9.5 grams of saturated fat), and 1,132 milligrams of sodium in the sandwich. As for the sauces, Parmesan Garlic will add 260 calories per a standard serving, Honey BBQ will add 140, and Mango Habanero will add 150.
Did we like the new sandwiches?
As it turned out, we liked all three sandwiches! Again, these things are messy and you should go in prepared. But when you do, you'll find tasty, buttery buns that are thick and fluffy and soak in the sauces well, alongside crunchy pickle slices, large pieces of chicken with great breading that stays in place, and a delightful sauce.
In the case of the Parmesan Garlic Saucy Chicken Sandwich, the herbs used in the sauce shine through, creating a surprisingly complex flavor profile for a sandwich that is essentially composed of four ingredients. It had a unique, almost unexpected taste. The Honey BBQ Saucy Chicken Sandwich is, as you'd expect, sweet and smoky with a classic American BBQ taste and the littlest bit of spice that brought warmth rather than serious heat. As for the Mango Habanero Saucy Chicken Sandwich, well, that one brings the heat! It was spicy enough that we were glad we tried it last, as the kick took over our taste buds for a bit. Yet, along with the heat was a fruity sweetness from the mango that brought balance to the sauce.
Now, do we recommend you order a Buffalo Wild Wings Saucy Chicken Sandwich during a first date or when you're conducting high-level business negotiations? No, we don't. But let's be honest, you probably don't do that at a Buffalo Wild Wings anyway, right? Ultimately, if you're okay with a bit of mess, you'll likely enjoy these sandwiches.
