The Clever Trick For Separating Egg Yolks And Whites With A Water Bottle
If you've ever made macarons, meringue, or anything else calling for egg whites, you know the struggle of trying to separate the yolk from the whites. This very conundrum has prompted cooks around the world to come up with their own little tricks for separating eggs.
Perhaps one of the most basic ways of doing it is by cracking the egg enough for the whites to slip out, but not the yolk. Another way to separate eggs is by pouring the egg into your hand, letting the whites slip between your fingers. However, it's worth noting that this particular method might result in the yolk breaking.
More recently, another way of separating the yolk from the whites went viral on TikTok. According to one TikToker, if you rub garlic on your fingers, you can pick up the yolk from the whites without any breaking. While that's certainly clever, there's yet another way to separate your eggs — and it doesn't involve getting yolks all over your hand.
Use a DIY egg separator
While you can certainly buy an egg separator, you can also use items you already have around your house. In fact, all you need is a clean and empty plastic water bottle.
According to SELF, this trick is as easy as cracking your egg into a bowl, squeezing your water bottle over the yolk, and slowly releasing the bottle to create a yolk vacuum. The yolk will slide into your bottle, and just like that, the whites and yolk are separated.
If your recipe only calls for egg whites, you might just toss the yolk, but truth be told, you should never throw out extra yolks. Instead, transfer the yolk from the water bottle to another bowl – if you plan to use it right away – or store it in an airtight container in the fridge.
Yolks can be used to make meatloaf, hollandaise, 3-ingredient crème brûlée, homemade face products, conditioner for your hair, and even paint. With so many uses, you certainly don't want to just throw egg yolks away!
