Every Prego Pasta Sauce, Ranked Worst To Best
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, "prego" means "you're welcome" and can also mean "please" in Italian language. If you reside in the United States, it's likely you've heard of the brand name Prego, which is known for their pasta sauces. Prego is owned by the Campbell's Soup company along with other food brands including Pace, Swanson, and V8, according to its website.
We've got a lot of love for pasta. It is one of our favorite dishes to make and one of our favorite dishes to eat. That's because there really is so much versatility when it comes to pasta. Do you want a veggie sauce or a meat sauce? Are you craving a creamy Alfredo or maybe a vodka sauce? We love and want them all. But sometimes making pasta sauce from scratch just isn't in the cards for a weeknight. Jarred pasta sauces are there for when you need them. These days when you go down the pasta aisle in the grocery store, you are bombarded with many options from a variety of different brands.
Prego is a well-respected and well-loved brand with a large variety of pasta sauces. And quite honestly, none of the Prego pasta sauces are outright bad. They all have something unique to offer. But with so many options, which ones should you choose? We've set out to rank every Prego pasta sauce from worst to best. Read below to find out where your favorite sauce stacks up.
32. Homestyle Alfredo
Prego Homestyle Alfredo contains cream, garlic, and parmesan cheese, according to the company's website. While we like making homemade Alfredo sauce, we'll admit that buying a jar is much easier. According to Walmart reviews of this product, some reviewers love it on everything from chicken to pasta, but one mentions that it "tastes like paste." Eek, that's no good! Another reviewer comments on the gross and strange flavor.
While some reviewers on the keto diet point out that it is perfect for their keto dietary restrictions, many mention that it needs to be doctored up a bit, instead of eaten as is. Jarred sauces are meant to be super easy. From our point of view, if we have to add something to a jarred sauce, we'd rather just make it homemade instead. For this reason, in addition to the notes on its strange taste, this one is at the bottom of the list.
31. Basil Pesto
Per the Prego website, the company's Basil Pesto is made from basil, soybean oil, romano cheese, and garlic. We have a lot of thoughts on various jarred pestos in general, and the Prego Basil Pesto, unfortunately, doesn't quite stack up. This pesto sauce is very oily. When we say very oily, we mean very, very oily. It requires a lot of stirring and even then, you cannot escape the excess oil.
Unfortunately, many reviewers on Walmart mention this sauce having a strange sour taste as well. The only thing worth noting is that this pesto happens to be nut-free. While traditional pesto sauces contain pine nuts or sometimes other nuts like cashews or walnuts, the Prego Basil Pesto contains no nuts at all. This may be a great option if you happen to be allergic to nuts. Otherwise, we would recommend skipping it. There are better options out there.
30. Chunky Tomato, Onion and Garlic
The ingredients list on the Prego website says that Chunky Tomato, Onion, and Garlic contains big chunks of diced tomatoes as well as onion extract and garlic extract. If you are looking for a chunky pasta sauce, Prego has many options under its Garden Chunky line. We love a good chunky vegetable pasta sauce to add flavor and texture to the noodles. If you don't like chunks of vegetables in your pasta sauce, but instead prefer a pureed sauce, this line might not be for you, but it might disappoint those looking for chunks as well.
According to reviews on Amazon, some people find that this particular sauce is not chunky at all, but instead surprisingly thin. Another reviewer notes that it serves as a good base for a pasta sauce, but you need to add meat and vegetables to it. Again, we aren't fans of being required to add some oomph to the sauce we just bought. Otherwise, we would choose to make a homemade sauce. This jar's simple flavor may appeal to some, but in our opinion, it's nothing special.
29. Artisan Four Cheese Alfredo
Prego Artisan Four Cheese Alfredo contains garlic and four cheeses: white cheddar cheese, asiago cheese, parmesan cheese, and romano cheese, according to Prego's website. While in theory, we love the idea of many types of cheeses working in harmony to create a well-balanced flavor, unfortunately, this sauce does not deliver.
A couple of reviewers on Amazon note that this sauce has no taste and is rather boring. Another boring Prego sauce that requires a lot of extra TLC in order to be something special. One even mentions that it is watery. Watery sauce is not what we are looking for when picking out a creamy Alfredo. It seems that while Prego offers many Alfredo sauces, some of them do not bring anything to the table. We're sorry to say that you may be better off making your own homemade Alfredo sauce than choosing a jarred Prego Alfredo sauce.
28. Lower Sodium Traditional Italian
Prego offers a few "healthy" sauce options including this Lower Sodium Traditional Italian sauce. Per Prego's site, this one contains diced tomatoes, tomato puree, canola oil, and sugar. Because this sauce boasts about its lower sodium content, we dug a little deeper to identify how this stacks up to the brand's other sauces in terms of sodium. This lower-sodium option contains 360 milligrams of sodium per serving, while Prego Traditional Italian contains 480 milligrams of sodium per serving.
Several reviews on Walmart note that this sauce, while lower in sodium than regular Prego, still has plenty of salt in it. While you may find yourself pleasantly surprised by the taste of this low sodium sauce, that might be because it really isn't very low in sodium after all. If you are on a low-sodium diet or otherwise watching your heart health, you should double-check that this is low enough in sodium for you.
27. Marinara Italian
Prego's Marinara Italian sauce is probably as classic as it gets. This sauce contains a strong tomato flavor that isn't overwhelmed by herbs, onion, or garlic. If you are looking for a good basic sauce, this one is for you.
Most reviewers on Walmart really love it, with an average of 4.6 out of 5 rankings. However, some reviewers say this sauce is too thin, and others say that it has a flavor they don't enjoy. But most agree that this sauce is pretty tasty, though again, many reviewers talk about adding extra ingredients to it. If you are looking for a very basic and thin sauce without chunks or much in the way of non-tomato flavors, this sauce is for you. For us, we prefer to set our sights a little higher, and boring marinara isn't going to cut it. Because of this, we've placed this sauce near the bottom of our list.
26. Roasted Garlic Parmesan Alfredo
Prego's Roasted Garlic Parmesan Alfredo contains butter, cream, garlic, and parmesan cheese, says the company's website. We believe this to be the best option out of Prego's three Alfredo sauce varieties.
According to reviews on Walmart, many people like this sauce. It is very creamy, but not too thick. Some reviewers suggest that it is an exceptional ingredient to use in recipes like casseroles or lasagna. We are making a mental note to try this out immediately, though the notes from some reviewers about this sauce's artificial taste make us a little apprehensive.
However, there are still some reviewers mentioning that this sauce needs to be doctored up a bit. Apparently, it is very common for consumers to buy Prego sauces as bases for their homemade concoctions. Are we the only ones that feel that a jarred sauce should be complete as is? This conundrum is having us question if we are the only ones that are lazy on weeknights.
25. Farmers' Market Roasted Garlic
The Prego website says that Prego's Farmers' Market Roasted Garlic sauce contains tomatoes, roasted garlic, and onion. The Prego Farmers' Market line is another "healthy" line offering from Prego. These sauces don't have any added sugar, unlike many of Prego's other offerings. Prego also claims that these sauces use simple ingredients.
According to reviews on Target, many tasters say that this sauce tastes homemade. With an average of 4.7 out of 5 ratings from 140 reviews, this sauce is well-loved. However, some reviewers note that the garlic flavor isn't as powerful as they would like. On the other hand, some other reviewers note that the tomato flavor is right on point and not too overpowering. We think that this roasted garlic flavor is probably what you'll want to reach for most nights, as opposed to some of the unique flavor offerings from Prego. But because you might have to add some extra garlic to get the flavor you want, we've placed this near the bottom half of our list.
24. Sensitive Recipe Traditional Italian
Prego says that the Sensitive Recipe Traditional Italian sauce is designed for those that cannot tolerate onion and garlic flavors. This sauce contains tomatoes, sugar, spices, and canola oil.
While some people might not like the taste of onion and garlic, others, including those with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), may not be able to properly digest them, according to Healthline. Additionally, many pregnant women experience strong food aversions to foods including onion and garlic during pregnancy (via What to Expect). The Sensitive Recipe sauce from Prego creates a solution to your pasta-craving needs despite all of that.
According to reviews on Walmart, many people with these dietary restrictions are really grateful for this sauce. They also seem to love it. However, others say it is lacking in flavor, which is to be expected when you eliminate flavorful ingredients like onion and garlic. Because of this sauce's limited appeal, we have put this near the bottom of our rankings. If you need to avoid onion and garlic, this sauce is a great option. Otherwise, there's just no reason to buy this.
23. Three Cheese Italian
Prego's Three Cheese Italian sauce is another tomato-based sauce that contains a strong cheesy flavor. The ingredients as listed on Prego's website include garlic as well as the three kinds of cheese: romano, ricotta, and parmesan.
According to reviews on Walmart, lots of people love this sauce. With 367 reviews, the average ranking is 4.7 out of 5. Many reviewers note that this sauce is super cheesy and excellent in recipes. Some people find that the flavor is lacking a bit and requires some doctoring up by adding cheese, vegetables, or additional spices. However, one thing is for certain, you've got to like cheese to enjoy this sauce. If you are not a cheese lover, skip this one. We find that this one is tasty and very cheesy, but not one of our top sauces. Because of this reason, we've placed it near the middle of this list.
22. Fresh Mushroom Italian
Prego's Fresh Mushroom Italian sauce contains very minimal ingredients of mostly tomatoes and mushrooms, according to their website. This sauce has a strong mushroom flavor, which can be very divisive, but interestingly many people seem to go nuts for this sauce.
Out of 442 ratings on Target, this sauce received an average of 4.7 out of 5. That's some serious mushroom love! According to some of these Target reviews, this sauce tastes homemade. That's one of our favorite qualities in a sauce, especially in one that's not actually homemade. Additionally, reviewers find this sauce not too sweet and not too garlicky. This sauce contains chunks of tomatoes and mushrooms contributing to its hearty taste.
While mushrooms are an extremely controversial ingredient, if you like mushrooms, this sauce is for you. We find that this is a rather classic and traditional flavor, which makes it applicable to many types of dishes. But, because you either love mushrooms or you hate them, we've decided to put this sauce near the middle of our ranking.
21. Tomato Basil Garlic Italian
Prego's Tomato Basil Garlic Italian is a very traditional red sauce flavor containing ingredients including tomato, basil, and garlic.
According to reviews on Walmart, out of 902 reviews, the average rating of this sauce is 4.7 out of 5. Not bad! Overall, this sauce is well loved. Some reviewers note that this sauce is not their favorite of Prego's varieties. They also mention, again, that this sauce serves as a good base for your own doctoring up, requiring some flavor add-ins such as herbs, spices, and vegetables. If we are being honest, this is probably the sauce we most frequently purchase because of its versatility. However, because this is a true ranking of the various Prego sauces and their taste, this one is not super unique or all that special. It's a very basic sauce, but that can be exactly what you are looking for. Because of this, this sauce is placed at the middle of our list.
20. No Sugar Added Traditional Italian
Prego's No Sugar Added Traditional Italian sauce is a great option if you are looking to choose a red sauce without any added sugar. The Prego site shows that this sauce contains mostly tomatoes, canola oil, garlic extract and onion extract.
This sauce contains zero grams of added sugar, as advertised. We are in the camp that sugar is not at all necessary in a red sauce. We feel that if you are going to purchase a jarred sauce, you may as well choose one without added sugar, because we don't need any more of that in our diets. According to reviews on Walmart, many tasters note that you cannot tell the difference in taste when you compare this sauce to their other sauces. Reviewers also say that this sauce is kid-friendly, healthy, and fits in their keto diets. Some people mention that this sauce is a great base to be adjusted by adding spices and meat, but if you do not want to do that, this sauce still holds up.
19. Farmers Market Four Cheese
If you are a health-conscious food lover and are looking for a cheesy tomato sauce that does not contain too many ingredients with names you don't recognize, this sauce may be for you. Per the Prego website, Prego's Farmers Market Four Cheese sauce contains tomato, basil, garlic, cream, as well as four cheeses: romano, parmesan, fontina, and asiago.
According to reviews on Walmart, many people love this sauce. One even says to "do yourself a favor and buy this" sauce. However, like most review sites, there are some contrasting opinions. Some reviewers find that this sauce lacks creaminess. One even mentions that the sauce is a bit watery. Overall, however, most people cannot get enough of this Farmers Market Four Cheese sauce. We happen to agree with some of these reviews. The sauce is cheesy and full of flavor, but not as creamy as we would have liked. For this reason, we've put this sauce near the middle of our ranking.
18. Mini Meatball Meat
Prego Mini Meatball Meat sauce is a classic marinara sauce with mini meatballs that contains the simple ingredients of tomato puree, beef and pork mini meatballs, and soy protein isolate (which we're guessing bulks up the meatballs a bit). We think this sauce is rather cute with the addition of mini meatballs. It makes for a great easy kid-friendly meal served over pasta.
According to reviews on Walmart, most people love this sauce, averaging a 4.7 out of 5 on the rankings. Many people love that the meatballs are included, making this a simple, two-step meal. However, there are some reviews that note the meatballs are a bit too salty and one reviewer that even mentions an odd sour taste. We know that one sauce cannot please everyone, but some of these comments make us question the ranking of this sauce. That's why we've put this one in the middle of our list.
17. Plant Protein Meatless Meat
Plant-based meals are all the rage these days. With so many amazing plant-based meat substitutes, it's no wonder why this trend is catching on. Prego's Plant Protein Meatless Meat contains soy protein isolate as its plant based meat alternative. In addition to the soy protein, this sauce contains tomato puree, spices, and canola oil (via Prego).
This sauce has a simple tomato flavor with chunks of meatless meat, making it a great meat sauce for the vegans or vegetarians at your dinner table. According to Amazon reviews, this sauce has a tasty and rich flavor. Many vegetarian reviewers note that the plant-based meat used in this sauce is actually tasty, as opposed to others that are not exactly delicious. If you are looking for a classic meat sauce that happens to be vegetarian, this is our recommendation. But keep reading, because Prego offers a large variety of plant protein sauces that all have slightly different qualities.
16. Plant Protein Traditional Italian
Prego's Plant Protein Traditional Italian sauce is another plant-based protein packed red sauce. According to Prego, this sauce contains plant-based protein made from pea protein isolate instead of soy. This is a great option for those that are allergic to soy or otherwise avoid it. Pea protein is another type of vegetarian protein that has grown in popularity over the years, and it's quite versatile.
In addition to pea protein, this sauce is blended with tomatoes, creating a smooth sauce with no evidence of added protein. While the chunks of soy-based protein in the previous entry aren't bad, they do still taste like fake meat, so the completely hidden protein in this jar gives it the edge. Maybe you are trying to increase you or your picky eaters' protein intake but don't like the taste of chunks of meat in your sauce. If so, this is the sauce for you.
15. Plant Protein Italian Tomato Sauce with Roasted Garlic and Herb
The last of the Prego Plant Protein sauces is the Plant Protein Italian Tomato Sauce with Roasted Garlic and Herb. This one is our favorite out of the plant protein Prego sauce offerings. This sauce contains ingredients including pea protein isolate, tomatoes, garlic, and herbs (via Prego).
The Prego Plant Protein Italian Tomato Sauce with Roasted Garlic and Herb sauce has all the benefits of the hidden protein found in the Plant Protein Traditional Italian sauce, but with lots of added flavor reminiscent of fresh roasted garlic and Italian herbs.
Again, this sauce offers a great way to increase your protein intake if you are working on balancing our your macronutrients or are an otherwise light eater. It turns regular pasta into a prtoein-rich meal while requiring no effort on your part. We like this sauce . For this reason, this sauce is placed near the top middle of our ranking.
14. Traditional Italian
Prego's Traditional Italian sauce is a tomato based sauce that is made for most of your classic Italian dishes. The ingredients in this sauce are diced tomatoes, tomato puree, canola oil, and spices.
According to reviews on Walmart, out of 363 reviews, this sauce averages a 4.6 out of 5 in ratings. Many reviewers note that this sauce is fine, but nothing special. Many people mention that it is a good base sauce to use to add flavors to, requiring some additions. One reviewer notes that this sauce is great with added sausage. Prego fans love the thickness of this sauce. One the one hand this sauce is a staple, making the perfect solution to many meals due to its simplicity. On the other hand, it could be described as boring and nothing to write home about. Because of this, we've placed this sauce in the middle of our rankings.
13. Roasted Garlic and Herb Italian
Prego's Roasted Garlic and Herb Italian sauce is beloved by many, and we can see why. This sauce is more traditional in flavor, containing tomatoes, roasted garlic, and spices, according to Prego's website. A classic tomato sauce seasoned with roasted garlic and Italian herbs makes a good addition to most dishes, making it extremely versatile.
According to reviews on Target, out of a whopping 1324 ratings, the sauce earned a 4.7 out of 5. Reviewers love this sauce because of its rich and bold flavor. While this sauce seemingly simple, Prego outdoes itself by executing this basic flavor profile so well. Reviewers note the thick and hearty consistency and profess love for this brand name. This sauce seems to have a fan base. The Prego Roasted Garlic and Herb Italian sauce is a great sauce option. You will not be disappointed with this sauce. We love it and think you will too, but there are some more special sauces higher on this list.

According to reviews on Walmart, many people feel this sauce tastes very similar to homemade sauces. That's definitely a good thing. Some reviewers note that it is not too watery, but instead rather thick. We prefer thickker sauces for pasta, as they really add some flavor to each bite and coat the noodles. Many reviewers mention that this is their go-to pasta sauce. While some mention that the Prego Farmers Market Tomato & Basil sauce would make a great base for soup, they go on to mention that it has great flavor on its own. Because it does not contain added sugars, reviewers also mention that this sauce is not overly sweet.
11. Roasted Garlic Parmesan Italian
Prego's Roasted Garlic Parmesan Italian sauce is a tomato-based sauce that contains a strong cheese-forward flavor (via Prego). With ingredients like tomato puree, diced tomatoes, parmesan cheese, and garlic, this sauce is the perfect sauce for cheese lovers who do not necessarily want mac and cheese or pasta Alfredo.
The Roasted Garlic Parmesan Italian sauce gives you cheese, garlic, and tomato flavor in equal measure. According to Walmart reviews, this sauce has a great flavor that delivers what it promises on the label: garlic and parmesan cheese. However, some reviews note that the garlic flavor is fairly strong. Since garlic can be particularly polarizing, we recommend avoiding this sauce if you aren't a mega garlic fan. We love garlic and we love parmesan cheese so this sauce is a big win for us. This is why we've placed it near the top portion of our rankings.
10. Lower Calorie Traditional Italian
The Prego Lower Calorie Traditional Italian sauce contains 45 calories and zero grams of fat per half cup serving, according to the company's website. Per Prego's website, this sauce contains tomatoes and a puree of sweet potato, carrot, cauliflower, butternut squash, spinach, and roasted red pepper. It's wonderful that each serving contains extra veggies that we otherwise would not have eaten. If we can get healthy by chowing down on pasta, we are all for it.
According to reviews on Walmart, this sauce has a great thick texture and is not runny like some other brands. Some customers note how awesome it is to serve their kids this sauce and not have their children detect the hidden vegetables.
