Mindy Kaling Finally Tried Her Office Character's Ridiculous Cocktail
Funny gal Mindy Kaling is arguably best known for playing the character of Kelly Kapoor on the hit comedy "The Office." Of her many memorable scenes on the show, however, the one that's probably most indelibly associated with her is in an episode called "Casino Night," when her onscreen boyfriend Ryan orders her "one seven and seven with eight maraschino cherries, sugar on the rim, blended if you can." To this day, no one knows why there has to be eight cherries, specifically, and we're not supposed to ask.
The scene is so iconic that recently, many years after the initial air date of the episode, a fan sent B.J. Novak (the actor who portrayed Ryan) the exact drink at a bar, per Showbiz CheatSheet. Since the show had recently burst back into the cultural mainstream during the COVID-19 stay-at-home pandemic, the kind (and hilarious) gesture made international news. So, when Kaling visited "The Kelly Clarkson Show," Clarkson gave the comedian her first taste ever of the sugary-sweet cocktail.
Mindy Kaling's first impressions of the ridiculous cocktail
So what exactly is the drink made of? The base is Seagram's Seven Crown Whiskey and 7-Up soda. Once this mix is good to go, the rim is coated in sugar, and the whole thing is topped off with a boatload of cherries. Mindy Kaling calls it "the most sugary drink of all time," and after she owned up to having never tried the concoction, Kelly Clarkson presents her with the cocktail. Naturally, she made sure it was blended. Because, you know, she can.
As both ladies sip carefully, Kaling, true to her comedienne status, cracks, "Mm, just giving me diabetes," while Clarkson likens it to a snow cone. Kaling then notes that "it's like, delicious," although possibly so sweet that a child would like it even more (obviously not appropriate due to alcohol content). No word yet on whether Kaling will imbibe again in the beverage, but doing so this once sure was sweet for the rest of us to witness.
