Why You'll Never See Martha Stewart Eat Plane Food
Even in the best of times, travel can be uncomfortable. But taking along your favorite snacks can make an arduous trip more enjoyable, and that's exactly what Martha Stewart does. In a 2017 interview with The New York Times, Stewart explained that she tries "to avoid plane food most of the time." Just like the food she was served in prison, it simply isn't appealing to her. "I just don't find it very appetizing," Stewart said. But the in-flight snacks that she packs with her might surprise you.
Unlike most travelers, Stewart does not follow the widely understood rule that overly aromatic foods should be left at home. According to The Travel, things like boiled eggs, tuna, and soups are some of the worst foods you can eat on a plane. Yet one of those is a snack Stewart never travels without. Stewart told the Times, "my hard-boiled eggs are just so much better than any eggs on the plane. They're from my own chickens. I take them for everybody I'm traveling with."
Stewart's other go-to plane snacks
Stewart also packs filling sandwiches and sides that are high in protein. "If it's a long flight I'll take some very good food that I know I'll want to eat on the plane. I might make a delicious smoked salmon sandwich on seven-grain bread; I might take a tabbouleh salad. I take homemade yogurt with apple sauce," she told The New York Times. Once Stewart lands, she is ready to find the best local places to eat a fuller meal (via Craves).
But Stewart isn't the only high-profile celebrity to refuse airplane food. Anthony Bourdain also abstained from airline meals, and he was obviously known for eating some rather odd things during his career. In a 2016 interview with Bon Appétit, Bourdain said, "No one has ever felt better after eating plane food. I think people only eat it because they're bored. I don't eat on planes. I like to arrive hungry." If the grub isn't good enough for Stewart and Bourdain, maybe everyone should plan on skipping the airplane meal and bringing their own snacks. Keep in mind that not everyone gets the same smelly food pass that Stewart gets, though.
