The Most Karen Moment Ever Caught On Tape At Costco
In the wake of all the political upheaval of 2020 and 2021, video of what the public deems a "Karen" has swept the internet. Even Dictionary.com has an official definition, saying a "Karen" is slang for "an obnoxious, angry, entitled, and often racist middle-aged white woman who uses her privilege to get her way or police other people's behaviors." In past months, "Ken" has also been adopted for the male version, according to Cyber Definitions.
Costco in particular has had its fair share of what people might deem a "Karen" or a "Ken." Its free sample opportunities alone have garnered so much attention it would be impossible to believe someone has not felt entitled to revisit and cheat their way to more and more free food. The Atlantic even reports that one customer actually housed "about a dozen soy sauce packets and '1.46 pounds of summer sausage and beef stick samples'" in his pocket from these stations.
Outside of the free samples, there are other truly weird things people do at Costco, like the man who bought enough beer for an army in one visit (via Finance 101). So what is the most Karen thing that's happened in a Costco store? Unsurprisingly, it involved wearing a face mask.
Costco Karen threw a tantrum when asked to put on a face mask
It is no secret that the COVID-19 era has brought with it a fair share of crazy stories, and this one is no different. If you've heard of people throwing tantrums on planes, well this "Karen" is giving them a run for their money. The U.S. Sun reported on a woman at a Costco location in Hillsboro, Oregon who went into the store on June 30 and was asked by an employee to put on her face mask after she had been found shopping without one.
The woman responded that she would not, with the shopper alleging she had a medical condition that would interfere with her wearing a mask. The situation eventually escalated to the point where the woman sat down in the middle of the store to make a point. She even went so far as to move to another location and sit back down, blocking a main path for other shoppers.
So what happened to the "Karen"? The video doesn't show, but she is definitely not the only one to pull a stunt like this. One woman at a Texas grocery store even went so far as to throw food to get her way when asked to put a mask on (via Fox News).
