A Dreaded Moment Has Seemingly Arrived For Fans Of Arby's Potato Cakes
The death knell has finally sounded for Arby's beloved potato cakes and fans of the starchy comfort food are devastated. According to The Takeout, Arby's has confirmed it themselves — potato cakes are out and crinkle fries are permanently in. How the company could think that crinkle fries, a sometimes soggy and pale potato product, could in any way compete with the crispy on the outside, soft on the inside goodness of a potato cake is a mystery. We get that the chain must have its reasons, and it did warn us back in May, but the substitution of crinkle fries just makes the whole thing worse.
"@arbys saddens me [to] see the potato cakes are no longer friends with meat," one fan wrote on Instagram. "What happened did the potato cakes cheat on you?" The caption was paired with a picture of the box that used to house the now discontinued potato product. Potato fan woodside007 adds, "The crinkle fries aren't any good. Bring back the potato cakes." This refrain can be seen over and over on Arby's Instagram.
Arby's confirmed to The Takeout the potato cakes were replaced after extensive market testing, but we have to ask — are they sure they got that test market correct?
We want our potato cakes back
It's possible potato cake love is a regional thing. While one fan mourns the product loss, others are replying in confusion. "What is potato cake? West coast Arby's thing?" @LaceySheffer inquired on Twitter.
Though some people seem to be unfamiliar with potato cakes, most fans are really, really worked up about this menu change. "I think Arby's should actually take notice of this that there is actually a 'Petition' that was created, asking for Arby's to please bring back their potato cakes? Wow?" @WhiteTeaRoses posted on Twitter.
And yes, that petition really does exist on Change.org. As of publication, it had 875 signatures. Will this movement be enough to soothe the sad stomachs of potato cake fans? A statement by an Arby's spokesperson's to The Takeout offers one ray of hope: "Although our Potato Cakes have been discontinued (for now), who's to say they're gone forever?"
