Here's How Much Prince Harry And Meghan Markle's Wedding Cake Cost
Choosing a cake design and flavor might be one of the toughest decisions for any couple while planning a wedding. But for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the world was watching their big day, and everyone wanted to know the details. The couple selected a baker, Claire Ptak, who uses "low intervention" methods and organic ingredients while bucking royal tradition (via Brides). But no one could blame them for not wanting to serve the traditional fruit cake that most other royals have chosen. Not to mention, Markle actually already knew Ptak.
Instead, the couple chose to serve a lemon and elderflower cake that still showcased royal roots. The cake was made with 500 organic Suffolk eggs and 200 Amalfi lemons. But the most special ingredient might have been the 10 bottles of Sandringham Elderflower Cordial that were made from elderflowers picked from the grounds of the Queen's home there (via Delish). Ultimately, it resulted in an aromatic cake that was perfectly balanced between sweet, sour, and floral. But all of those organic ingredients, and the labor required to make enough cake for their guests, definitely added up to a royal price.
This is how much the layers add up to
Based on Ptak's website and information from past royal weddings, Delish estimated the total of what Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding cake should have cost. Their math added up to $32,555. However, others estimated that the wedding cake actually cost a lot more. Ivy Jacobson, senior digital editor at The Knot, told CBS that the cake should cost closer to $71,600.
Jacobson arrived at that number based on the premium ingredients that were used in the cake, the detail and on-site assembly required, delivery, and much more, like the fresh flowers that adorned the cake. The cake had to feed hundreds of people. Another thing to consider is that Prince Charles sent out 4,000 slices of fruit cake as gifts in tins after Prince William and Kate Middleton's nuptials, according to Delish. So, if he did the same on behalf of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, that certainly would have run the price tag up, too.
