Read This If You Recently Bought Wavy Lays
On August 11, the FDA announced that Frito-Lay had issued a voluntary recall of 31 bags of their Wavy Lay's Original Potato Chips. To be very specific, the product in question are the chip bags weighing 7.75 ounces; these are not to be confused with the family size bags, which are double that size.
If you live outside of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, there is good news. According to the investigation detailed in the statement, the wavy potato chips were distributed to a handful of retail stores in those three states. Per the findings, the chips would have been available for purchase as early as July 23, 2021. Remember, only 31 bags were possibly affected, so the chances you may have picked up a recalled bag is slim. Frito-Lay assured that no other "products, flavors, sizes, or variety packs" were affected. This was a standalone operation.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time Frito-Lay has had to recall a product. According to NASDAQ, the agency issued a recall back in May for its Ruffles All Dressed Potato Chips. Here's the kicker: Those chips were recalled for the same reason the Wavy Lay's were.
The chips pose a threat to those with a milk allergy or sensitivity
The reason for the recall seems to only affect those who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk. In a statement to the FDA, Frito-Lay explained the wavy chips had been pulled from shelves after it was discovered the product may contain "undeclared milk ingredients." "An investigation following consumer contact" was done in order to arrive at this result. For reference, milk and milk-related ingredients are not listed in the bag's nutritional information section nor ingredient list.
To Frito-Lay's knowledge, there had been no reported allergic reactions or issues regarding these chips. This was as of August 11, when their press statement was released. Anyone with a milk allergy or sensitivity is strongly advised to toss the Wavy Lay's Original Potato Chips bag away immediately.
