Everything We Know About The Upcoming Wolfgang Puck Documentary
Earlier today, Disney released the first trailer for "Wolfgang," a documentary of the celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck (via YouTube). The film is set to start streaming on Disney+ on June 25, a week after its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
The focus presented in the trailer, as People reports, is a reflection on Wolfgang Puck's incredibly successful career, from its humble beginnings to how he sees himself today at age 71. The film follows his journey from a small boy in the Austrian countryside with a stepfather who disdained the idea of male cooks to his founding of Spago, where he became the go-to celebrity chef. It also highlights the modern-day Puck, who has no sense of stopping: "At my age now, I probably should say, 'Wolfgang, slow down and take it easy.' But it's quite the opposite."
Still, the film has forced Puck to accept that he has come quite the distance in his career, achieving, in Puck's words, "the American dream."
The documentary is in good hands with David Gelb
Of course, who is directing the movie is just as important — if not even more important — than the subject matter itself. After all, they compose how the story flows and choose which aspects receive focus. In David Gelb, "Wolfgang" has a solid food storyteller, as Puck probably already knew.
For those less familiar with David Gelb's IMDb page, he is the director who first made his name with the 2012 documentary "Jiro Dreams of Sushi." The film shows the 85-year-old Jiro Ono, his sushi restaurant Sukiyabashi Jiro, a 10-seat establishment located within the subways of Tokyo, and his 50-year-old son who still lives in his father's shadow.
"Wolfgang stepped into the spotlight in a way no chef ever had before," Gelb said, per People. "In doing so, he showed that a chef could be a storyteller, a teacher and a friend." With such skills, Gelb will almost certainly be able to craft an equally exquisite viewing of the force that is Wolfgang Puck and the legend that is his food.
