Padma Lakshmi Just Asked Fans For Help After Family Tragedy
Earlier today, "Top Chef" host Padma Lakshmi took to Twitter to share some tragic news. A close friend of the Lakshmi family, Nafiah Fatima, suffered a devastating acid attack outside her home in Elmont in New York's Long Island borough on March 17. According to People, the 21-year-old college student was walking on the driveway next to her house when an unknown male assailant splashed a cup of acid into her face. She survived the attack, but has been badly burned and is now at great risk of losing her eyesight.
Lakshmi, who has known the Fatima family for over a decade, took to Twitter to ask fans for their help following this tragic attack. She posted a heart-wrenching video describing the "beautiful girl" who "has had her whole life shattered" because of this senseless, brutal attack. Lakshmi has asked anyone who is able to contribute to Fatima's GoFundMe, the proceeds of which will be put towards her medical bills. "If you're able to donate, any small amount would help. I've made a donation myself. I would really, really appreciate it," said Lakshmi.
Padma Lakshmi has also asked anyone with information to come forward
Shazia Anjum, a friend and neighbor who organized the GoFundMe page, noted that the donations will help cover "the several different expenses that this family has and will continue to incur due to this attack." That includes medical expenses not covered by insurance, as well as a home security system, legal fees, and any loss of income the family struggles with as they help Nafiah heal. To date, the campaign has raised more than $220,000 from 6,000-plus people.
Nafiah has also received an outpouring of support, including many people who were quick to express their support and condolences. "This is so so scary and horrific. I hope Nafiah gets the help she needs and that the perpetrator is found and charged," one follower wrote on Lakshmi's Twitter post. "Praying for a speedy recovery — so sorry for what happened to her," another posted.
Lakshmi has also asked that if anyone has information related to the attack, to please contact Nassau Police at 516-573-8800.
