TikTok Just Changed The Game When It Comes To Buttering Up Toast

Buttered toast is one of those simple delicacies that hits the spot at pretty much any time of day. However, unlike some meals, it's practically impossible to plan when you might want to indulge in a slice or two ahead of time. Rather, toast cravings tend to come on hard and fast as soon as you spot a loaf of bread in the kitchen. Unless you keep a stocked butter dish out on the counter, you are probably going to have to figure out how to get a stick of cold, refrigerated butter ready for spreading by the time your snack pops out of the toaster. Or, at least, that used to be the case.

Back in 2021, TikTok user @laurentokk completely changed the toast-buttering game when they shared their genius hack for how to easily spread cold butter on a piece of toast or bagel without completely mangling your carb of choice. In their video, @laurentokk showed how a vegetable peeler can slice thin pieces of butter longways off the top of a cold stick. Then, they showed a method of strategically placing these butter strips over the top of a bagel to ensure every inch is covered. Because the bagel is still warm from the toaster, the butter slices quickly become soft and spreadable, resulting in a perfectly buttered, ready-to-consume snack.

Other kitchen tools to use for spreading butter

We have to toast TikToker @laurentokk for this brilliant buttered toast trick, which, if we're being honest, we're a little disappointed we didn't think of ourselves. Several other people were impressed as well and made sure to let the content creator know in the comments section of their November 2021 video.

"I never thought to do that for butter...nothing worse than trying to spread cold butter on bread," @deboraherenow wrote. "I literally gasped. This is so genius and simple!" @polishedpiggy quipped while a third commenter said the hack was, "such a brilliant idea."

A veggie peeler isn't the only kitchen tool that will take the hassle out of spreading cold butter on bread, either. A fruit zester, garlic press, or even a cheese grater can get the job done, so toast lovers don't need to fret if their peeler is nowhere to be found. Additionally, you also have the option of keeping a stick of butter out on the counter for when those buttered toast cravings creep in. However, while this has been deemed safe by the USDA, the taste of butter can be affected after being out for just a few days at room temperature. Therefore, unless you're going through an entire stick of butter every two days, this might not be a perfect solution. Try the peeler hack, instead.
