Austin Butler Ate 2 Dozen Donuts A Day To Prepare For Elvis
Anyone who keeps up with Hollywood knows that actors sometimes take on some pretty extreme diets for the sake of truly immersing themselves in a character. Of course, this still varies from one situation to the next, as some roles require an actor to lose weight while others require an actor to gain weight. A few simply require actors to pack on muscle. For instance, a superhero actor's diet for an actor like Chris Pratt might include large amounts of proteins while limiting carbs and avoiding sweets entirely.
That being said, some actors may use less traditional methods to gain or lose weight for their roles. Jared Leto once took on a diet of drinking melted ice cream mixed with olive oil and soy sauce and Matthew McConaughey beefed up by throwing back pizza, cheeseburgers, and beer. Much more recently, Austin Butler surrendered himself to a similarly extreme diet in order to put on weight for his titular role in "Elvis."
How did Austin Butler prepare for his role in Elvis?
Right off the bat, we know Austin Butler had to put on some weight in order to play Elvis Presley. Similarly to what Renée Zellweger ate for her role in "Bridget Jones's Diary," Butler committed to eating dozens of donuts each day, as well as drinking melted ice cream. Talk about a sugar rush!
However, diet wasn't the only change Butler had to go through for his role. He also went through extensive vocal training to sound just like the music icon — to the point that he still talks like the music legend, even a year after the movie wrapped up. In an interview with HuffPost, Angela Bassett attributed the lingering Elvis voice to how deeply Butler immersed himself in the role.
And honestly, you can see for yourself just how much the Oscar nominee admires Elvis in his recent appearance on the Hot Ones. He said of the legend, "[Elvis] really believed that he would be forgotten after he died, which is just so sad and mind-blowing to me ... I wish he was here today to see all the people around the world who just adore him so much."
