Your PB&J Is Missing A Savory Edge
Peanut butter and jelly has been one of the most popular sandwich condiment duos for a long time, and it offers so many varieties. You can pair crunchy peanut butter with strawberry spread, creamy peanut butter with grape jelly, or peanut butter spread and honey with blueberry preserves, to name a few. You can also experiment with different types of nut butters for your sandwiches, like almond and walnut.
But what about what goes between the two condiments? After all, when mayonnaise is the sandwich condiment, it usually "sandwiches" other ingredients like meat, cheese, and a leafy veggie, so who says PB&J can't do the same?
PB&J with Tay, an award-winning San Antonio, Texas restaurant that specializes in peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, asked that very question. It decided to have some fun with its sandwiches by adding a little something extra between the bread for a PB&J sandwich upgrade. Something savory, salty, and crunchy, all at the same time.
This ingredient adds more protein to your sandwich
According to the restaurant's website, PB&J with Tay "makes nostalgic sandwiches served with kindness," all on Texas Toast with a side of Classic Lay's potato chips. The family-owned eatery is one of only a few peanut butter and jelly restaurants in the nation, owner Jeremiah Burns told KENS5 in an interview. You can play it safe and order a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or you can spice things up by adding ... bacon!
The online menu lists seven sandwich varieties that include bacon. The Texan includes peanut butter, jalapeno jelly, and bacon, while the Elvis comes with peanut butter, bacon, and banana. If you want more of a breakfast sandwich, you might want to try The Egg-Cellent, which features peanut butter, over-hard egg, bacon, and strawberry jalapeno jelly.
All bacon sandwiches are priced between $9.50 and $13.50. The Kitchen Sink (Double Decker) wins the award for the bacon sandwich with the most ingredients. In addition to bacon, it's stuffed with peanut butter, Nutella, cream cheese, walnuts, banana, coconut flakes, and your choice of jelly.
PB&J with Tay is a brick-and-mortar restaurant located on McCullough Avenue in San Antonio, Texas, but it also offers a mobile food truck. Don't live near San Antonio? No worries; with such basic ingredients and minimal cooking required, you can make your own PB&J with bacon sandwich at home.
