Here's Why You Need Cream Cheese On Avocado Toast
It seems like you can't go anywhere these days without coming across avocado toast on the menu. No longer reserved for only chic brunch places, this popular toast has recently gone mainstream and for all the right reasons too. Besides making for a healthy breakfast option, avocado toast is packed with flavors, quick and easy to make, and easily customizable. Want more protein? Top it with a fried or poached egg. If you want a vegan option, however, you can also use pumpkin seeds. Want to add more flavor? Throw on some cotija cheese or even a little grated parmesan you may have lying around from last night's dinner. Looking to spice things up? Sprinkle some red pepper flakes on the toast. There are several ingredients you can add to avocado toast to make it even more delicious.
We've got one more for you. And boy, is it one for the books. The recipe books, that is. This simple trick plays up the natural creaminess of avocado in a surprising and delicious way.
Make your avocado toast extra creamy with cream cheese
Instagram star @Dubaitastes, a "dentist by day, foodie by night," shares an easy trick to take a traditional avocado toast recipe up a notch (via Kitchn). Though the post has since been removed, @Dubaitastes suggest adding light cream cheese to your avocado toast, which can help amplify what you already love about its flavor and texture. This might sound like a surprising combination, but according to @Dubaitastes, mixing in a quarter cup of light cream cheese with a smashed avocado forms a delicious creamy green spread. The Instagram star claims that in addition to doing wonders for the flavor of your toast, this simple trick can also help prolong the freshness of the avocado.
In order to hold up to that hefty spread, @Dubaitastes recommends using a hearty sourdough loaf for your toast. To make it even creamier, he also recommends lightly buttering your sourdough toast before adding your avocado spread. Out of cream cheese? No problem. You can swap it out for ricotta cheese, which also provides about 5 grams of protein, per Very Well Fit. Pop an egg on top of that and you've got yourself a seriously delicious protein-rich breakfast.
