We Tried Doritos New Sweet & Tangy BBQ Chips ... Tasty But No Wow Factor
Doritos entered the chat this week with some new flare to add to its extensive portfolio of chip flavors. With well over 100 flavors, the chip brand kicked off the new year with a bold take on an American classic with a new Sweet & Tangy BBQ flavor. What will this company think of next?
This newcomer demonstrates that flavors like BBQ, typically associated with warmer months, can be enjoyed all year round, even in January. Doritos' new Sweet & Tangy BBQ will accompany your winter soups in the same delicious way you would throw Doritos on your plate with a hot dog in the summer. Doritos shows that BBQ will become a must-grab chip all year round.
When we heard about a new Doritos flavor hitting store shelves, we knew we had to get our hands on a bag. We tried Doritos new Sweet & Tangy BBQ chips ... here's what we thought.
What ingredients make up the new flavor?
Looking at the back of the Doritos bag, we discovered the ingredients remained consistent with many of the brand's other flavors. Unsurprisingly, most of these ingredients consist of artificial flavors, oils, and seasonings that don't encompass or showcase the actual flavoring of the chip. Ingredients like artificial colors, corn syrup solids, and disodium guanylate left us needing to remember what flavor came in the bag in the first place.
We recognize some ingredients, including tomato powder, onion powder, and sugar, which are consistent with the components of a barbecue sauce. Nothing on the label jumped out at us or highlighted that this chip would be any more barbecue flavored or tangier than another. It remains consistent with other chips we've tried.
We expected something to jump out more from the packaging that would set this chip flavor apart from the ones that preceded it. We still have to do the taste test.
How much does one bag cost?
If there's one of many things we love about Doritos, it's that they won't break the bank. While original Doritos come in various sizes and packages, affecting the pricing, the Doritos Sweet & Tangy BBQ flavor will be available in the 9.25-ounce bags for a suggested price of $5.59 (prices may vary depending on your location).
This larger bag can serve a group of people or last a day while you're on the couch binging your favorite show. Each pack contains nine servings, but let's be honest. We recognize we all consume more than one serving of chips, especially when it comes to Doritos. Once you open a bag of this size, stopping after a handful or two takes work.
A little over $5 won't set you back when venturing to the grocery store for your weekly stash of snacks, so next time you visit a major retailer, toss a bag in your cart to try this new tangy barbecue flavor for yourself.
How long and where will it be available?
The new Sweet & Tangy BBQ Doritos launched on January 6 and will be available until further notice. After the launch, we expect Doritos to monitor its sales and success to determine if the Sweet & Tangy BBQ flavor will live on shelves on a more permanent basis, like the original flavors we buy today. After testing it ourselves, only time will tell if this flavor will secure prime real estate on store shelves for years to come.
You can find the new Sweet & Tangy BBQ Doritos on Snacks.com and at major retailers like Walmart, Sams Club, and Rite Aid. We expect a full rollout to any store you usually find your favorite Doritos flavors.
Whether you like the flavor or not, Doritos chips, by nature, are addicting, so if you go through one bag quickly enough, you'll be running back to the store for another one sooner than you expected.
How does it compare to other Doritos flavors?
The new Sweet & Tangy BBQ Doritos set out to recreate the classic BBQ Doritos we all know and love. While these chips were tasty, we felt they needed to reinvent the wheel with a revolutionary new flavor. BBQ is a flavoring that's been a chip lover's favorite since the beginning of flavored chips, so it's challenging to attempt to recreate or improve that greatness.
After tasting a few chips, we missed the sweetness, complex spices, and tanginess promised in the name and felt like it was a less flavorful version of the standard BBQ chip. This Doritos bag could have used more sweet and tangy flavoring to stand out among other BBQ-flavored chips. Packing more sweetness in each bite would have offered a more Hawaiian barbecue level of taste that would make it more unique.
At the end of the taste test, we felt this spin on a classic BBQ chip left us wanting more.
What is the nutrition of the new chips?
If we're looking to eat healthier, processed foods like french fries, chips, and cookies are the first that comes to mind to cut from our diet.
Regarding calories per serving, the Sweet & Tangy BBQ flavor aligns with the standard of about 150 calories per serving, which comes to about 11 chips. With nine servings in the bag, you're looking at closer to 1,400 calories if you eat the entire load.
In the case of chips, we usually don't bother to look at the nutrition facts because these are comfort food, not diet friendly. We believe in everything in moderation, so to level your expectations, know each serving contains 18 grams of carbohydrates, 7 grams of fat, 1 gram of sugar, and 190 milligrams of sodium.
The ingredients cause the most concern as the majority are processed and full of seed oils, artificial colorings, and dyes. If you want to feel your best, you should probably steer away from Doritos, although we know they can be addicting, per the New York Post.
We tried Doritos New Sweet & Tangy BBQ chips...
We love Doritos chips as much as the next person, but we left this taste test a little disappointed. Disclaimer, the new Doritos Sweet & Tangy BBQ chips taste incredible, but they did not provide the added wow factor we expected. When tasting something new, we are hoping for more of a unique flavor.
As tried and true BBQ chip lovers, it's challenging to one-up the classics, and for us, this fell short of the original flavor. As we ate more of the chips and got further to the bottom of the bag, we did pick up hints of the sweet and tangy spices inherent in the name.
If you're looking for a new chip to add to your rotation, give this one a try, but in the end, we'll stick with our tried and true original BBQ Doritos or Cool Ranch Doritos for some added flavor.
