TikTok Hates That It Loves '80s 'Velveeta Fudge'

We're all familiar with Velveeta, the violently yellow, shelf-stable brick that dares to label itself as cheese. However, despite its very uncheeselike nature, Velveeta is pretty darn tasty, and makes a great addition to countless recipes.

Because Velveeta melts so beautifully, one of its best uses is in a meaty Rotel queso dip recipe. Just throw it together in a skillet with some chorizo and a can of Rotel, and bam — perfect queso for your tortilla chips. Per Big Oven, Velveeta also makes "the best" mashed potatoes, and considering how we feel about cheesy potatoes, we might have to try it.

But while these recipes seem like perfectly reasonable uses for faux cheese, other recipes have us raising an eyebrow. Yes, we're talking about that Velveeta fudge recipe straight out of the 1980s. The thing is, though, as awful as it sounds, TikTok has concluded that Velveeta fudge might just be a major win.

What's the deal with TikTok's Velveeta fudge?

According to Smithsonian Magazine, Velveeta has been around since 1923, and by the 1950s, these "cheese" bricks were being marketed specifcally toward busy housewives. Velveeta, quick and easy to use in any number of recipes! Velveeta, liquid gold! No wonder we wound up with Velveeta fudge by 1984.

B. Dylan Hollis recently took on the Velveeta fudge recipe for his TikTok followers, with nearly everyone disgusted by the mere thought of combining Velveeta and chocolate. However, after mixing together his butter, Velveeta, cocoa powder, confectioners sugar, and vanilla extract, Hollis — and TikTok, for that matter — was stunned to find the fudge tasted really good.

But how is this possible? We can first point to the fact that Velveeta isn't actually real cheese. Secondly, as another TikToker helpfully commented, "Nothing can be bad once you add two pounds of powdered sugar." Others theorized that the Velveeta fudge was perhaps similar to a "dense chocolate cheesecake." When you put it that way, it doesn't seem so gross, after all.
