The Donut-Shaped Corn Dog That Delighted And Confused Instagram
If you had to guess what it was from the photo alone, there'd be no uncertainty. It's a donut, right? A plain, boring donut, the one that's always the last one picked from the box. But what's with the mustard on the side? South Philly-based Okie Dokie Donuts shared a similar picture on Instagram with a surprising caption. "Would you believe me if I told you this donut was a corn dog? BAM! It is!"
The corn dogs are made with Sabrett hot dogs, which are covered with a sweet batter in the shape of a round donut, but don't let the "donut" part confuse you. These are actually corn dogs, served without the stick. While they come with a side of deli mustard, you can also dip them in ketchup or whatever other condiment you'd dip a regular corn dog in.
These donut-shaped corn dogs contain no gluten, soy, or nuts, so they're safe if you are allergic to those ingredients. Okie Dokie Donuts started selling these delightful and confusing treats on July 1, 2022. So what did the fans have to say about them?
Okie Dokie Donuts fans react to donut-shaped corn dogs
One Okie Dokie Donuts fan responded to the news on Instagram with this remark, "WHAT IS THIS MAGIC" while another asked where the restaurant even found round hotdogs. Okie Dokie Donuts playfully claimed, "shhhh it's a secret," but the second photo in the post revealed that the hotdogs are cut in half, vertically, to make them more pliable.
The post garnered over 1,000 likes. Another respondent expressed their joy about the idea by commenting, "I'm so happy for your achievement!! Also, how was this not the first donut you ever made?" In case you don't know, Okie Dokie specializes in small-batch donuts, and its menu changes monthly, so this special flavor was available throughout the month of July.
These sweet-and-savory treats must've been a hit though, because an August 3 Instagram post revealed that they would be available through the end of summer. And then another post announced that they were still available in late October. Okie Dokie Donuts commented in the August 3 post that other variations would be offered later when the owner "finds the time to play around." But judging by the posts between October and the time of this article, it looks like "later" hasn't come yet. So keep an eye out, South Philly! These delicious and instagrammable donut-shaped corn dogs might just become available on Okie Dokie's menu again.
