Hocus Pocus-Inspired Sanderson Sister Shots Recipe
The "Hocus Pocus" sequel has us eagerly awaiting the return of the lovably evil Sanderson sisters. The iconic witchy trio of Winifred (Bette Midler), Mary (Kathy Najimy), and Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) is finally back for more haunts on Disney+, and we are ready to watch their antics with a few potions for ourselves in hand.
Below, developer Michelle McGlinn shares a few elixirs from her own spell book. Each drink is portioned to be a 2-ounce shot, able to be enjoyed all at once or sipped slowly. Each shooter is fruity, sweet, and strong, meant for enjoying responsibly as an accompaniment to full cocktails or mixers.
This recipe features a drink for each Sanderson sister, matching their jewel-toned flowing capes. We also have some potential ingredient swaps, full cocktail ideas, and an easy game for using the shots during the movie. After all, there's no better way to enjoy a Disney classic like "Hocus Pocus" — or "Hocus Pocus 2," for that matter — than with a drink in hand. Come, we fly!
Ingredients? It's just a bunch of hocus pocus (i.e. booze)
To make each magical sister's potion color, you'll need quite a few liquors. Don't worry, though; you'll only need an ounce or less of each, so look for half-size bottles when possible.
All in all, you'll need sour apple liqueur, butterscotch schnapps, spiced rum, and blue Curaçao to make the Winnifred (in green). That last ingredient and cranberry juice form the Sarah (in purple). And for the Mary (in red), grab blood orange liqueur, grenadine, and framboise liqueur. Creating each color depends on specific ratios of each liquor, but you can swap the grenadine for cranberry juice and omit the spiced rum and framboise to reduce the ingredients list.
Brew the Winifred-inspired shot
For Winnie's lip-puckering green apple shot, grab the sour apple, butterscotch schnapps, spiced rum, and blue Curaçao. Pour the green and gold liquors into a shot glass or potion bottle, then add a splash of blue Curaçao. Add as little Curaçao as possible. Aim for about ⅛ ounce — just enough to turn the pale ochre into a magical bright green. Alternatively, you can add one drop of blue food coloring. This shot tastes like a caramel apple and is dangerously strong... almost as though she's put a spell on you.
Make the Mary shot, pair with... scrod?
For Mary's crimson color, mix together blood orange liqueur, grenadine, and framboise liqueur. If your blood orange liqueur is clear, the drink will be a fiery orange hue. If you can't find blood orange liqueur, you can swap in Cointreau or Grand Marnier, orange juice, or freshly squeezed blood oranges.
Feeling particularly witchy? Splash in a half ounce of tequila and a black salt rim for an extra strong elixir, or shake the blood orange, tequila, and grenadine with lime juice and ice for a twist on a margarita.
Run amok with the Sarah-inspired shot
Just like Sarah herself, this drink is fun and magical to create. The simple, equal-parts blend transforms the sky blue Curaçao into a deeply witchy purple tone. The shot is surprisingly fruity for its deep purple color, tasting more like summer in its orange and cranberry flavors. While this citrusy shot is good on its own, you can also turn this into a bubbly highball by adding tonic water or ginger beer on top.
Sisters! Come, we fly!
Enjoy these shooters before the movie starts or while watching. We suggest (cautiously) taking a sip of the corresponding drink whenever you hear each sister's catchphrase, and finishing a drink whenever someone lets out a title-dropping "hocus pocus!"
Pair these fruity, sweet shooters with spooky Halloween snacks like cheese and pretzel broomsticks, black cat cookies, and candy eyeballs. Ready for a fun "Hocus Pocus 2" watch party? Check out our Sanderson sisters shot recipes below.
