11 Popular Sonic Blast Flavors, Ranked Worst To Best
If you've ever been to a Sonic Drive-In, then you know that a large portion of their menu is made up of snacks, fun drinks, and milkshakes. Yes, you can definitely get a full meal at Sonic, but one of their most popular menu offerings isn't a meal at all, it's a dessert. The Sonic Blast is an ice cream treat, featuring Sonic's vanilla soft-serve ice cream, with some kind of dessert or candy mixed into it. If you're thinking that sounds an awful lot like the Dairy Queen Blizzard, then you'd be correct. The Sonic Blast is just Sonic's version of the Blizzard, but with some of their own unique twists on it as well.
There are quite a few Sonic Blast flavors the fast-food chain offers, so it can definitely be overwhelming. But seeing the most popular Sonic Blast flavors ranked worst to best, can help you decide which frozen treat is worth buying. Because after all, why waste time and money on something that isn't all that great? And unfortunately, some of the Sonic Blasts just aren't that great.
11. M&M's Sonic Blast
Even if you've never had an M&M Sonic Blast, you can probably imagine what it tastes like. As Sonic's menu describes, the treat is basically "A spoonable treat made with real vanilla ice cream mixed with Mini M&M'S® Chocolate Candies." That's it! But because Sonic uses the miniature M&Ms candies, the color from the candy bleeds out into the ice cream and when it mixes together, can start to look kind of gross.
But that's not the only reason why this is Sonic's worst Blast on their menu. The ice cream obviously melts the candy coating on the M&Ms, and there's just not a lot of flavors left behind. Sure, there are tiny pieces of chocolate mixed in with the vanilla ice cream, but that's not all that exciting and is kind of underwhelming. Additionally, there are a lot more exciting flavors of Sonic Blasts out there, so definitely don't waste your time with this one.
10. The Triple Chocolate Sonic Blast
While Sonic Drive-In definitely offers different flavors of Sonic Blasts, they will sometimes come out with new options. The Triple Chocolate Sonic Blast was introduced in 2020 and is definitely a chocolate-lovers dream. At least, it sounds like it would be. The blast seems identical to the Master Blast of 2014 and features vanilla ice cream mixed with chocolate syrup, chocolate chips, and soft brownie pieces, according to Brand Eating. Yes, it's still made with vanilla ice cream despite being called the Triple Chocolate Sonic Blast, and as any chocolate lover knows, simply mixing vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup just isn't the same.
Additionally, there was really only one resounding flavor throughout the Sonic Blast, as one review pointed out, and it was the chocolate chips. Again, chocolate chips aren't exactly the best or most delicious chocolate-flavored thing out there, and the fact that they kind of overwhelm the rest of the treat is kind of disappointing. Even if you adore chocolate, you're better off skipping this one.
9. Oreo Sonic Blast
The Oreo Sonic Blast is probably exactly what you think is, honestly. It's simply Sonic's vanilla ice cream mixed with crushed Oreo cookies. And while it's still pretty simple and not too crazy, there's no denying the fact that Oreo cookies just belong with vanilla ice cream. Honestly, there's a reason why cookies and cream ice cream is such a popular ice cream flavor. The Oreo Sonic Blast is pretty much Sonic's homemade cookies and cream ice cream, and with that in mind, it's definitely not their worst Sonic Blast.
That said, it's also not their best. Again, the Oreo Blast is pretty plain and simple, and while some people might really enjoy that, the treat isn't all that exciting. If you're looking for something unique and different that you can only get at Sonic, this obviously isn't it. Even the most die-hard Oreo lovers might find this treat underwhelming, so just be warned that this won't take your breath away with how delicious it is.
8. Turtle Pecan Sonic Blast
Another flavor that Sonic has introduced in their lineup of Sonic Blasts is the turtle pecan Sonic Blast. The Turtle Pecan Sonic Blast is pretty good, although there are some areas where the frozen treat could certainly improve.
First of all, the Blast is made up of vanilla ice cream salted caramel syrup, chocolate chip pieces, and pecans. And while all that might sound good in theory, Sonic fails to incorporate all those flavors together in a delicious way. According to one review of the Blast, the caramel flavor is way too subtle, and there aren't a lot of pecans in the Blast, either, so it's almost just a vanilla chocolate-chip Blast with a few pecans and a slight caramel flavor. If the caramel syrup were incorporated better, and there were more pecan pieces, then it might be a lot better. Unfortunately, that isn't the case and so this Sonic Blast is definitely one of their worst offerings.
7. Reese's Sonic Blast
The Reese's Sonic Blast is a lot like the Oreo or M&Ms Sonic Blasts in that it's simply the Sonic vanilla soft-serve, with some crushed-up pieces of Reese's peanut butter cups mixed in. Obviously, if you're a fan of peanut butter or just Reese's in general, then you'll probably truly enjoy this Sonic Blast. But, really, this dessert isn't all that exciting or great. The peanut butter taste is a little underwhelming, and depending on how your Blast is made or who makes it, you might not even get that many chunks of Reese's in your order.
So, because the Reese's Sonic Blast is inconsistent, lacks a ton of extra flavor, and just isn't all that delicious, it's a lower-ranking treat from the fast-food chain. Obviously, there's nothing like a Reese's peanut butter cup, but at Sonic, the Blast is basically just a giant serving of vanilla ice cream with a few pieces of candy tossed in. Overall, it's better to avoid it.
6. Butterfinger Sonic Blast
It might seem like simply adding crushed-up candy to soft-serve ice cream is a pretty boring and simple idea, but there are certain candy brands that really just work when blended into ice cream, and Butterfingers are one of them. The Butterfinger Sonic Blast is exactly what you think it is, just Butterfingers crushed up and blended into vanilla soft serve, but it's also seriously tasty.
As one review of the Blast put it, it was surprisingly decent. "The vanilla ice cream was fairly mellow and not too artificial tasting while the Butterfinger pieces weren't stale, remaining nice and crunchy." Basically, the Butterfinger Blast is super tasty, and the texture is also seriously impressive. The flavor from the Butterfingers also nicely disperses throughout the soft serve, meaning that the entire Blast will have a good amount of peanut butter flavor, even just from the candy. So, if you're a true peanut butter lover, then the Butterfinger Blast is probably going to satisfy you a lot more than the Reese's version.
5. The Caramel Brownie Sonic Blast
Moving on up the ladder of the best Sonic Blasts is their Caramel Brownie Sonic Blast, released in 2020. The Caramel Brownie Sonic Blast obviously features their vanilla base of soft-serve ice cream, blended together with salted caramel and brownie chunks.
One review of the Sonic Blast revealed that the flavors in the Blast weren't really strong enough to come through. "I might have enjoyed a few more brownie pieces and think that caramel usually needs to be more pronounced in any dessert it's in," the review stated. Once again, Sonic has proven that even though the concept behind a certain Sonic Blast might sound delicious (caramel? And brownies? Yum!), it isn't always executed all that well. And so if you're a big fan of caramel and brownies, you might have to ask for extra to be blended into your Blast to really get the flavors of each incorporated throughout. Whatever the case, this Sonic Blast definitely has potential, though it still isn't their best.
4. Snickers Sonic Blast
The absolute best candy-based Sonic Blast is without a doubt the Snickers Blast. The Snickers Blast is obviously just Sonic's vanilla soft serve blended with Snickers bars, but it's actually one of their better offerings of the sweet treat.
One review of the Snickers Sonic Blast described the dessert as being pretty darn good and showed off the sizeable chunks of Snickers bars throughout the soft serve. Perhaps the reason why the Snickers Sonic Blast is the best candy-based Blast from the fast-food joint is that Snickers bars in general are very complex and have a ton of variety. Snickers have peanuts, caramel, nougat, and a milk chocolate coating, so when they get crushed up and blended into vanilla soft-serve, there's going to be a ton of different flavors and textures throughout the dessert to keep things interesting. This is definitely one of Sonic's better Blasts, so give it a go, especially if you're a Snickers fan!
3. Cheesecake Sonic Blast
Sonic Drive-In definitely likes to try new things, and in 2021, they announced a new flavor for Sonic Blasts, a Cheesecake Blast! The dessert is basically just a vanilla soft-serve blended with pieces of plain cheesecake, and the flavors really come together well.
Scott Uehlein, vice president of product innovation and development for Sonic, said in a press release that the new Cheesecake Sonic Blast would really impress fans of the fast-food chain. "From the rich, velvety flavor to the craveable crunch of the graham cracker, Sonic magically perfects the unmistakable experience of indulging in decadent cheesecake, with no fork or plate necessary," Uehlein said. A review of the Cheesecake Sonic Blast raved about how delicious the creamy creation was, "They definitely hit it on the head when they said 'cheesecake blast,' because this one is blasted with some cheesecake flavor. I'm almost speechless with this one!" Clearly, this is one Sonic Blast worth trying.
2. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Sonic Blast
Sonic Drive-In has come up with some pretty clever and unique flavors for their Sonic Blasts, but one of the best is actually one of the most classic flavors.
The Sonic Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Blast is definitely one of Sonic's best options in terms of desserts. Obviously, the Blast is simply just Sonic soft-serve vanilla ice cream blended with chunks of chocolate chip cookie dough. It sounds pretty low-key, but it's honestly better than any chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream you can get at the store. Because Sonic's soft-serve vanilla ice cream is so creamy, rich, and delicious, it pairs perfectly with the little bites of chocolate chip cookie dough, and brings out the flavors of the cookie dough, too. Additionally, the texture of the cookie dough works so well in the ice cream because it's already so soft and the tiny little chocolate chips provide just the right amount of subtle crunch.
1. Strawberry Cheesecake Sonic Blast
Finally, the absolute best Sonic Bast that you can order is the Strawberry Cheesecake Sonic Blast. This version brings out a whole new side to Sonic's signature dessert, and honestly is pretty impressive, as it almost tastes like something you would get at a gourmet ice cream shop instead of a fast-food drive-in.
According to the Sonic menu, the Blast is pretty decadent. "Real ice cream mixed with the rich flavor of cheesecake, graham cracker crumbs and real strawberries into a thick and creamy shake, finished with whipped topping, more graham cracker crumbs and a cherry," is all that goes into the dessert. Um, that already sounds delicious, and reviews of the Blast agree that it's honestly one of the best things on Sonic's menu. And if you've tasted the Strawberry Cheesecake Sonic Blast, then you would agree that it's probably the best Blast on the menu. The flavor is super strong and runs deep throughout the frozen treat, and the textures of the strawberries, cheesecake bites, and graham crackers all work to create something totally unique.
