Sam's Club, a subsidiary of Walmart, is suing BJ’s Wholesale Club for allegedly stealing its mobile app technology. The suit alleges that BJ’s new Express Pay is suspiciously close to Sam’s Club Scan & Go and was made with the same technology.
This unique technology powers a self-checkout option that helps customers shop and ring up purchases on their phones instead of at the checkout line. As per CNBC, Walmart did not develop Scan & Go in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as they had been developing it for years.
Per the lawsuit, BJ's has infringed on patent rights held by Walmart, and BJ’s merely changed the in-app colors and the name from Scan & Go to Express Pay. There is no word yet on what the federal court has to say about this unsavory situation.
