The Real Reason Pudding Pops Were Discontinued
By KAREN HART
If you were an ‘80s kid, Jell-O Pudding Pops might have been a staple in your freezer when you were younger, but not anymore. This childhood nostalgia-evoking frosty treat has been discontinued, and here’s what happened to it.
Jell-O Pudding Pops soared in popularity in the 1980s and, within five years of their debut, they were bringing in $300 million. However, General Foods, new to the frozen food game, didn’t have the know-how to profit off of their hugely successful product.
In 2004, the company tried to salvage their creation by licensing the Jell-O name to Popsicle, who used their own mold instead of keeping the original shape. Unfortunately, these "pudding pops" just weren’t the same, and were never able to achieve the following or sales of Jell-O Pudding Pops.
